Despotify was behind the Spotify hack

The open client "Despotify" gave access to sensitive information about Spotify users.
Daniel Ek, CEO at Spotify, says: "They have simply managed to build a client which can communicate with Spotify's servers".

Spotify gained information about a group of people that managed to compromise their protocol. Investigations have shown that they have gained access to information that lets them test different passwords in order to find the right one. The group of people are those behind the open source Spotifyclient "Despotify" which is an inofficial version of Spotify's own client that can be used to connect to Spotify's music service. Spotify says that no database access has been granted, only information that has been made public to the clients about specific users.
