As you may have heard, Symantec Corp. bought PGP Corporation along with GuardianEdge Technologies, Inc. in order to "extend its ability to help customers secure and manage their most critical information".
Not all are equally enthusiastic about the idea that American corporations have the responsibility for our privacy. As an example IBM gave half the encryption key for the Lotus Notes product to the Justice Department. This basically means that the American government can decrypt emails sent with Lotus Notes in real time.
That is one side of the coin.
According to Security Expert Per Hellqvist at Symantec the goal is to create a good structure for encryption and to make it simple.
Hopefully this leads to an extended use of encryption and signing of email making it possible to verify the sender of an email. This might also be a big step in the fight against spam.
