Despotify: "We do not want to harm Spotify"

The Despotify group extracted about 40 password hashes before the vulnerability was fixed. They are puzzled about why the information was so detailed. All they had to do was to add a shared, or collaborated, playlist. Spotify replied with loads of details about the playlist's owner account; Name, date of birth, e-mail address and a hashed password file.

Despotify was behind the Spotify hack

The open client "Despotify" gave access to sensitive information about Spotify users.
Daniel Ek, CEO at Spotify, says: "They have simply managed to build a client which can communicate with Spotify's servers".

MySQL: Change the root password

One of the good habits of the security aware administrator is to regularly change password on critical system accounts. If you have a MySQL Server installed, then the MySQL root account definately belongs in this group.

It might be a good idea to change your Spotify password

Spotify has been attacked through a security vulnerability in the service. The vulnerability was discovered on December 19th, 2008. Now Spotify's technicans believe that the flaw is more critical than first feared and they found that the vulnerability has been used by a group of hackers. Passwords of user accounts created before December 19th might be in the wrong hands.

A note on passwords

This cannot be repeated enough, hence this post.

Passwords are often considered an obstacle by many and a lot do not understand why they exist. The passwords are mostly controlled by a policy that require the user to change them regularly and the password must be this long and that complex. How do you create strong passwords without being a Memory Guru?
